Peanut Onion Chutney – Easy Chutney Video Recipe for Idli/ Dosa

Peanut and Onion Chutney is another variety of chutney that goes well with any south indian breakfast recipe such as idli, dosa, upma. Simple yet very tasty chutney that you should try.

Serves – 2
Preparation time – 5 mins
Cooking time – 10 mins


  • Peanuts – 1/2 cup
  • Oil – 1 tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Onion 9chopped) – 1/2 cup
  • Red Chilli Whole (dry variety) – to taste
  • Tamarind Concentrate – 2 drops or use fresh tamarind juice.
  • Jaggery – 1 tsp or tot aste
  • Garlic (chopped) – 1 big

Seasoning –

  • Oil – 1 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Dry Red Chilli Whole – 1 no
  • Asafoetida – pinch
  • Curry Leaves – few
  • Urid Dal – 1/2 tsp

Procedure :

Microwave peanuts for 2 1/2 mins until they are crunchy. Set them aside.
In a pan add oil, when it is hot add in the red chillies, garlic and fry for 10 secs. Add in onion and cook till they are soft. Add pinch of salt just to help the onion cook faster. Cook for 3 mins. Set aside in a bowl to allow it to cool down.
Add the onion mixture, peanuts, salt, jaggery, tamarind into the blender jar and blend till smooth. Remove it from jar set it aside.
Prepare the seasoning, by just heating up the oil in the same pan, when the oil is enough hot add in the mustard seeds and allow to pop, add in cumin seeds and fry for 10 secs followed by red chilli, asafoetida, urid dal, curry leaves and fry till urid dal slightly changes in color. Add the seasoning into the chutney. Serve with dosa, idli or upma.
