Masala Sandwich – Using Tawa & Sandwich Maker

_DSC0236Masala Sandwich is one of my family’s favorite sandwich recipes. It is filled with potato masala and creamy paneer with some spicy green chutney. Serve it by itself or with ketchup or green chutney.







Makes – 4 Sandwiches
Preparation time – 10 mins
Cooking time – 30 mins

For green chutney

  • Cilantro (wash, discard stems and use fresh leaves and thin stems) – 1/2 Cup
  • Salt – to taste
  • Lemon Juice – 2 tsp or to taste
  • Green Chillies – 2 or to taste
  • Garlic – 1 small clove
  • Ginger – 1/4 inch piece

For potato masala

  • Oil – 1 Tbsp
  • Curry Leaves – 1 Sprig
  • Mustard Seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Green Chillies (finely chopped) – 4 or to taste
  • Potato (peel, finely chop and boil) – 2 medium
  • Paneer (grated) – 1/2 Cup
  • Garama Masala Powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Cilantro (finely Chopped) – 1/2 Tbsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Onion (thin slices) – 1/2 medium
  • Butter – 2 Tbsp
  • Bread Slices – 8


For green chutney:

  • In a blender add green chillies, lemon juice, cilantro, salt, ginger, garlic. Blend till smooth. Use water if needed.

For potato masala

  • In a pan add oil.
  • When it is medium hot add in mustard seeds.
  • When they start popping, add in green chillies, curry leaves, turmeric powder, onion.
  • Cook for 1 min and add in the boiled potato.
  • Add in garam masala powder, salt, cilantro.
  • Cook for 30 secs and turn off the heat.
  • Stuffing is ready.

Assembling Sandwich:


  1. Apply butter on the bread slice
  2. Apply green chutney as well.
  3. Put some potato masala, add paneer on top. Cover with another bread slice.
  4. Repeat step 1 – 3 with the remaining bread slices.

Using Sandwich Maker:

  1. Preheat the grill. Put the buttered side of the sandwich facing the grill. Apply some butter on the top slice as well.
  2. Grill until golden. Fry the remaining sandwiches in similar fashion.

Using Tawa:

  1. Preheat the tawa.
  2. Place the buttered side of the sandwich facing the tawa.
  3. Put any weight and fry till golden on bottom side.
  4. Then flip it to fry on the other side too.
  5. Fry the remaining sandwiches in similar fashion

Serve the sandwich by itself or with green and/or tamarind chutney
